Anthony Gordon: Newcastle United agree £45m transfer fee with Everton for winger 2023

Introduction

Newcastle United have agreed a £45m fee with Everton for winger Anthony Martial. The deal is expected to be announced in the next 48 hours, with executive vice-chairman Lee Charnley revealing that the Magpies will hold on to the French international until Premiership rivals Liverpool pull off their own move for the 21-year-old. "We're happy with where we are and I think we'll manage just fine," Charnley told The Northern Echo. "It is not as simple as saying Manchester United want this, or that player - it's a way of life here at Newcastle that there is never any panic." Charnley also revealed that United have agreed an initial bid for Everton striker Romelu Lukaku with representatives from the Belgian club, but denied reports in the national press that United had decided against signing either player

Newcastle United have agreed a £45m fee with Everton for winger Anthony Martial.

The Magpies are keen on signing the French international, who has been strongly linked with a move away from Goodison Park in recent weeks.

Newcastle have held on to Martial until Liverpool make their move for him though and now want to sign Romelu Lukaku as well as Martial - who scored 22 goals for Marseille last season.

The deal is expected to be announced in the next 48 hours, with executive vice-chairman Lee Charnley revealing that the Magpies will hold on to the French international until Premiership rivals Liverpool pull off their own move for the 21-year-old.

It has been reported that Everton are hopeful of concluding a deal for Gordon before their Premier League meeting with Manchester City on Sunday but Newcastle will not stand aside while a major rival continues their pursuit of the winger.

"We're happy with where we are and I think we'll manage just fine," Charnley told The Northern Echo. "It is not as simple as saying Manchester United want this, or that player - it's a way of life here at Newcastle that there is never any panic."

Newcastle have had several bids for everyone - but only one came back from Everton for Gordon, who has been on loan at St James' Park since last summer.

Charnley also revealed that United have agreed an initial bid for Everton striker Romelu Lukaku with representatives from the Belgian club, but denied reports in the national press that United had decided against signing either player.

He said: “We are very close to getting a deal done with Everton, who are very keen on having him here. It was just about getting everything right and making sure both parties were happy with it before progressing any further."

"I don't think there's anything wrong with our position over Romelu," he continued. "We've got an interest in him at this moment in time and I think we'll progress it during pre-season."

"We've had several bids for everyone," explained Charnley. "Roman has been spoken about but if he goes then he goes. It is not our position to stand in another clubs' way."

The Echo report that Lukaku's agent, Mino Raiola, who represents him alongside super-agent Paul Stretford and former Liverpool star Muzzy Izzet, has met with United over a possible switch to Old Trafford this summer.

It means there will be plenty of competition for 25 year-old striker Lukaku in the coming weeks as Everton look to sell him before they can sign someone else on deadline day (January 31).

Conclusion

"We're happy with where we are and I think we'll manage just fine," Charnley told The Northern Echo. "It is not as simple as saying Manchester United want this, or that player - it's a way of life here at Newcastle that there is never any panic."
